Lifestyle Changes for Better Health

There is a good chance that if you have been diagnosed with a health condition or you have self diagnosed yourself,  you may be suffering from several related conditions as well.  If you have high blood pressure or hypertension, you may have pre-diabetes or the beginning stages of heart disease.  I mention this because having one instance of these types of conditions, usually means your current diet is not working for your body.   If any of these statements cause alarm, make you worried or in the least raise an eyebrow, that is good!   This is a good time to start paying attention to your body’s cries for help.

Our bodies are amazing and complex in that all of our organs and glands work in complete synchronicity.  Essentially, if one organ is failing, ultimately all organs will follow suite.   We speak often about  (5) key organs; the brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys, but we have over (74) additional organs that are vital to maintaining the entire body.  I would like to mention a few important organ/glands listed below that are rarely focused on in mainstream conversation.  These glands may malfunction first before you even notice that there is something amiss with the vital organs listed above:

  • Pituitary Gland
  • Thyroid
  • Pancreatic Gland
  • Adrenal Gland
  • Bladder

These very important glands along with dozens of other glands, keep our bodies functioning optimally.  I urge you to get familiar with all of the vital organs and glands that keep your body functioning.  You do not have to be a physician to know your body’s composition and what makes it tick, literally.  If you studied the way your body works the same way you study your cell phone’s functions, you probably would not be reading this blogpost.  I am not pointing fingers, I was you at a different time and place.  I am still you.  I am here attempting to get you on board with saving your body and your life.

Ultimately this conversation will turn right back to what you are consuming anyway because this is where the dysfunction or malfunction started.   The nutrients you decide to consume daily  will control how your body operates.  If you continue to consume nutrient deficient food, your body will systematically begin to break down.  It is impossible to tell which gland will malfunction first because everyone is different.  Every single one of us have different sensitivities to certain additives which are found in processed food so they affect each one of us differently.    I am not telling a story that has not been told already.  It is widely known that there are preservatives and additives in everything we consume, yes even the vegetables and fruit we buy if they are not organic.

I do not like to make suggestions without posing a possible plan of action. So if you fit into the situations listed below as an individual who currently:

  • consumes fast food on a regular basis (daily, breakfast, lunch or dinner)
  • purchases prepared meals in the frozen food section or in a can
  • eats meals prepared by someone who shops in the frozen food section or buys fast food
  • does not know how to cook meals

I have some immediate remedies to tweak your daily diet to get yourself out of the vicious cycle of body food abuse.

Start with limiting the amount of fast food you consume.  If you are eating fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner on a daily basis, this is one the major reasons you may be experiencing health issues.  Let me tell you up front, it is going to be challenging to change your fast food eating habits.  First because fast food is convenient and it is tasty.  Period.   Secondly, you have developed mean cravings for this particular type of food and when the craving hits you, the food is readily available probably around the corner from you.  Fast food is a really hard  habit to break but it can be done.   Start by eliminating eating fast food for dinner because if you can end your day with a truly nutritious meal, you will feel more inclined to start the next day with a better breakfast.

Pack a lunch. So lunch will be the ultimate challenge because if you work a 9 to 5, chances are you have lunch buddies.  “Where are we going for lunch?”  If this is your daily routine, I feel you.  So, your lunch crew is going to roll their eyes but you have to decide if their whining is more important than your body’s cries for help.  Simply start by making your lunch 2 times a week and making better choices when you eat out with your friends at work.  What are those better choices? Salad or dishes that are comprised of mostly vegetables.  You do not like vegetables? You are going to have to learn how to love them.  What should you pack for lunch?  Start with a sandwich, a bag of chips and your favorite cookies.  I don’t know you or what you like but I am making some worse case scenario assumptions here.

If you do not cook, learn how. So let’s assume you do not know how to cook.  Cooking can be time consuming and does require a bit of preparation so I do understand the immediate hesitation.  However, if you have made the decision to do something about your health and I am making anther assumption if you have read thus far, then you will have to start to prepare your own meals.  There are tons, I mean literally TONS of blogs, videos and apps to teach you how to make ANY meal you want.  If you can follow directions and have access to a kitchen, you can make your own meals.

Incorporate exercise into every day.  Driving to the fast food joint or corner store does not count.  So if you are not exercising or moving your body, this may be part of the reason your body is malfunctioning.  I will not pretend to know what your level of fitness is but I can tell you that your condition will only worsen if you are not moving your body.  You have to start somewhere, start with walking or stretching for at least 20 minutes.  Join a group of walkers from your office or community .  Get a bike and ride it for 20 minutes a day.  Get a dog and you will surely have to walk.

Start eating a plant-based diet.  There tons of reasons to change your eating plan to a plant-based diet.   A plant-based diet for weight loss is easier than it seems: You can still enjoy all the same foods you love, you are just cutting out meat and dairy.  “Yeah right”, you might be saying if you are a big meat eater or cheese lover but it is easy to get creative by adding plant-based ingredients to salads and soups, oatmeal, or stir fry.  If you would like in depth information about what a plant-based set can do for your health, check out this book
Eating Plant-Based.

I am full of suggestions but I cannot make the choice for a healthier you, for you.
