How to Stop Smoking Cigarettes

First lets discuss the reasons why you might want to stop smoking:

  1. Experience A Longer and Higher Quality of Life
It may not be obvious however, people who do not smoke cigarettes do actually live longer than people who do smoke cigarettes. Even if you are a chain-smoker, someone who smokes more than 10 cigarettes daily, you can add more time to your life by quitting the habit now. Cigarettes contain nicotine and harmful chemicals that can lead to several dangerous diseases, which ultimately result in death.
  2. Save Your Family and Friends Effects From Passive Smoking
Second hand smoke does harm those around you.  Most smokers are smoking cigarettes that have filters in them and since your body has become accustomed to the smoke the effects the smoker is very different than the effect caused to  non-smoker.  How many times have you heard stories about the non-smokers in a smoker’s household that are inhaling passive smoke, contracting lung disease or cancer?  If you have not heard or are unaware, please check this website out for information about this very eye-opening information.   These unfortunate situations are due to passive smoking.  Passive smoking is as dangerous as the direct use of cigarettes.
  3. Potential House Fire
Every year, several cases of house fires are reported due to cigarettes. It has been documented that during 2012-2016, an estimated annual average of 18,100 (5%) reported home structure fires were started by smoking and killed an average of 590 (23%) people annually, injured 1,130 (10%) per year, and caused $476 million in direct property damage (7%) per year. (data provided by www.npfa.org)  These numbers may seem small but honestly do you want to take the risk?

Smelling Like Cigarette Smoke An Ashtray: People who smoke not just develop various deadly diseases, but also start smelling like a burning cigarette. In social situations and at home people prefer not to be in the same space or be near you. When you decide to stop smoking you will notice that this changes.

Improve Your Sex Life: Smoking affects your health, personal life, and also puts an impact on your sex life. Your stamina decreases and you start feeling low all the time. In addition, your partner, may or not want to be in close company for long periods of time.

How To Stop

  • Slowly eliminate the places where you smoke. This will remove the various ‘comfort zones’ and narrow smoking places down to fewer places. Where you smoke will be less convenient to get to and not as comfortable.
  • Reorganize or refresh your comfort zones.  Invest sweat, time, and money into the places you regularly smoke, like a fresh coat of paint or new furniture in previous smoking rooms and eliminate objects and any things that would have made smoking comfortable.  Meticulously detail the interior of your car  and deodorize to the best of your ability.  You will not want to smoke in these updated zones because you have labored or spent money, so now smoking in these newly updated areas would defeat the time, energy, and monetary values you have spent.
  • Forge an alliance and quit with someone to create personal accountability. If the other person(s) lapses and return to smoking, you can tune into their pain and disappointment which will in turn affirm the reasons why you can not smoke again.
  • Announce that you have quit smoking with close family and friends to create a wide circle of accountability.
  • Allow yourself to over-sleep and take frequent naps. You can reduce stress by taking extra time to sleep to support the mind and body to ‘rewire’ itself.
  • Work with a counselor to address and overcome the anxiety that comes with the withdrawal of nicotine.
  • Use your creativity to self-express any emotions such as writing, poetry, drawing, painting, singing, building or wood carving.  The list doesn’t end here, there are countless creative expressions, find yours.
  • Immerse yourself into healthy relationships with those seeking the ultimate spiritual, mind, and body practices.
  • Try out new  nutritional and exercise routines, perhaps working with professionals for accountability and direction.
  • Volunteer with organizations with purposes and visions that match your own, you will be surprised how you outlook will change after ridding your body of the chemicals from cigarettes.
  • Say to yourself  “smoking is not an option”, frequently.
  • Visit health-driven dwellings: communities, homes and workplaces.  Surround yourself with like-minded individuals that will be supportive.
  • Align your words with your beliefs and actions.

It does take work to direct the power of the mind’s influence on the body.

This process uses and influences physical, occupational, intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional performance behaviors. You will have to create tasks and environmental goals to build and direct your accomplishments.

One cigarette will lead to more. It has been documented that it is easier to quit cocaine, heroin and crack than it is to quit nicotine.

If you do suffer a nicotine relapse please try the following:

  • Go back to step one above and initiate a new process
  • Tell yourself this is your last cigarette and BELIVE IT TO BE TRUE
  • Get some professional help or join a support group
  • Address your underlying purpose to smoke
  • Maintain personal accountability throughout the process

I know you can do it.

Disclaimer:
If you choose to quit using the “cold turkey” method you could experience some mental and physical issues, such as angry outbursts, overwhelming anxiety, and debilitating depression.   Additionally, purging nicotine can result in physical issues including amnorea, acne, and constipation.
